If I Could

for June.  because sometimes just one person is enough.

i would give you
in Savannah,  the sweet
scent of cedar and oak,
curling low across the
sun, until it found us,
arm-in-arm, walking
young and wise,
Henry street

i would give you
on the porch,  with
Brother and Momma,
doors hung
with the striated colours
of dry-kernelled corn,
the Still of the Night and
its Wildwood Flowers
ablaze and abloom
all around us

and if i were a good,
a very, very, good
i might be allowed
to find just the right
the ones just
Brother’s bass,
the ones just
Momma’s soprano

and there
we would
            you and i and

‘til the Waving Girl
beckoned us on
to Bonaventure’s gates,
where we would
undisturbed, ‘til she
called us home

Okay, I’m composed enough to comment finally. What a beautiful gift you’ve given me. I can’t tell you how deeply touched I am. I will treasure this always. You are a very special lady and I’m so blessed to have you in my life.
