Happy Birthday

did you really
think
i would not say it
the way you
thought
i would not drink it,
the proffered poison
that is your voice

this morning
North Carolina with a bike
rack crept before me
i was not gentle
i was not kind
to the monstrous stone
beast heading east
towards
          well
to wards
          and
away from

in these last
weeks, i have
met
the man they know
the man of whom
you
so often spoke

he has
brushed my cheek
with his icy hand
he has
humbled my heart
with his frozen jaw
he has
crushed my will
with his silence

his Silence

you know, it was
always the silence
that hurt the most
always the silence
that did the most
Damage

damage you say
you are
          Done
doing

if that is so,
my lover,
my darling,
then why do
i
still cry

the phantom limb
that once was
You
is sharply
awake
aware
         keen
alive

it quivers and trembles
in bed with me each night
both of us
abandoned
lost
unremembered

but
      What
am i saying
this is the day of your
Birth
a day for song and celebration
now
     especially
now

for you are re
born
without me
and he is
free,
this incarnation,
to be
        only
what he was
before me
nothing less
and
nothing more

somewhere
there is a box
my name is not
on
it, but my
life
lies inside

someday
this coffin will
arrive
and i
        too
shall be
released
from this cage
of Our making

then

then
it will be
your
turn to wish
me
a very Happy
Birth Day
