Summer
is trundled
‘cross the plains
in blocks of baled
cotton and bed rolls
of yellowing hay

Black Angus
Momma cleans her calf
in the last green waller,
while high above in the
deepening blue, a fleur-de-lis
crest of birds wing south

all of us
             braced
‘gainst the onslaught of
Winter
